2015DBRP_218 Jer32-33 Pro3b 1Cor11

In yesterday’s reading we heard some of Jeremiah’s most important words:

this is the new covenant I will make with the people of Israel on that day,” says the LORD.

“I will put my instructions deep within them, and I will write them on their hearts. I will be their God, and they will be my people. … I will forgive their wickedness, and I will never again remember their sins.”

When you think about it, what God has always wanted is rather simple: He would like to be our God, and He would like us to be— and act like, His people.

Translation note:

15“In those days and at that time I will raise up a righteous descendant from King David’s line.
He will do what is just and right throughout the land.
16In that day Judah will be saved,
and Jerusalem will live in safety.
And this will be its nane:
‘The LORD Is Our Righteousness.’

That’s right. This time it is ‘her’ Jerusalem that is called ‘The Lord is our righteousness.’

I will read verses 5-9 as a reminder, because these represent the core of Proverbs. The I will pick up at v.13.

Translation notes:

14For [she,] wisdom[,] is more profitable than silver,

and her wages are better than gold.

15Wisdom is more precious than rubies;

nothing you desire can compare with [Lady Wisdom//her].

Paul wraps up his discussion about food offered to idols. And an important part is to learn from what happened to Israel. Finally he summarized:

whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God. 32Don’t give offense to Jews or Gentiles or the church of God. 33I, too, try to please everyone in everything I do. I don’t just do what is best for me; I do what is best for others so that many may be saved.

Translation notes:

3But there is one thing I want you to know: The head of every man is Christ, the head of woman is [the] man [(her husband or her father)], and the head of Christ is God.

5But a woman dishonors her headc if she prays or prophesies without a covering on her head, for this [would be//is] the same as shaving her head. 6Yes, if she refuses to wear a head covering, she should cut off all her hair! But since it is shameful for a woman to have her hair cut [short] or her head shaved, she should wear a covering.d

8For the first man didn’t come from woman, but the first woman came from man.

9And [the first] man was not made for [the first] woman, but [the first] woman was made for [the first] man.
