DBRP_Feb01_2014 Ex3-4 Job32 Jam1

Moses responds to God's call, returns to Egypt with Aaron, and has a successful meeting with the leaders of the Israelite people.

Elihu's first if six chapters lecturing Job.

James tells us to consider it a great joy when troubles come our way. Don't miss James' reasoning for this seeming contradiction. Then he speaks very strongly about not just being people who merely listen to God's Word. We must do it.

DBRP_Jan31_2014 Ex1-2 Job31 1Ptr5

At the beginning of Exodus, we hear of Moses' birth and his young adulthood in Egypt. He murders a man and has to flee for his life, going to Midian. We also read of his helping the seven daughters of Reuel.

Job finishes his long defense.

Peter ends his letter with advice to elders and young men. God's grace to us includes such things as suffering.

The last two chapters of Genesis: Jacob's very prophetic blessings for each of his sons. Then we hear the conclusion after Jacob was buried and the eventual death of Joseph.

Job tells of his anguish, in the 5th of 6 chapters of his speech.

Peter tells us how to take Christ as our example, and to live as those associated with the name of Christ— especially when it is in God's will for us to suffer.

Jacob blesses Pharaoh, Joseph leads powerfully during the worst of the famine, Jacob blesses Ephraim and Manasseh, putting the younger Ephraim above his older
brother. (And if you remember Jacob's story you'll know where he got
that idea.)
Job's 4th chapter of his monologue, where he speaks of his previous blessed life and high position.
Peter's instructions to wives, husbands, and all Christians, particularly when we suffer.

DBRP_Jan28_2014 Gen46 Job28 1Ptr2

Jacob arrives in Egypt and we take a head count of Jacob's family.

Job's third chapter of his six-chapter speech: Job tells us where to find wisdom and understanding.
Chapter 2 of 1 Peter is one of the richest in all Scripture. This includes the wonderful "living stones" passage, which includes much about our spiritual identity because of our being joined to Christ, the Corner Stone.

Pharaoh's dream, and what happened to Joseph as a result of his correctly interpreting it.

Job allows Bildad only 6 verses before he interrupts him.

In Mark, the death and burial of Jesus.

Today in Genesis, Joseph interprets two dreams, but says something very significant: Interpreting dreams is God’s business.

And Job continues to ask why God doesn't bring the wicked to judgment, and why God seems to ignore the distress of good people.
In Mark 15a, Jesus is tried by Pilate, and Pilate caves in to pressure and condemns Jesus. The soldiers beat and mock Jesus, he is crucified, and then many more people mock him.

Today we hear of the less than auspicious beginnings of Judah's line, particularly involving Tamar, who was more righteous than Judah. And we hear about Joseph working for Potiphar and then being thrown in jail. Even in jail, he rose to the

top.

Today Job responds for the second time to Eliphaz.

Announcements: See the new Announcements tab here at the web site!

In Mark today Jesus is arrested, tried before the council, and Peter denies knowing Jesus.

Today we hear about the descendants of Esau.

In Job 21, in my opinion Job totally wins over Zophar's argument yesterday in Job 20.

Today we read the awesome prophecy chapter of Mark.

Jacob's daughter Dinah is raped, and the perpetrator Shechem is killed and all the males in his town. God tells Jacob to return to Bethel. Rachel and Grampa Isaak die.

In Job, Zophar's speech doesn't say so directly, but clearly implies that Job is guilty of wickedness and deserves the punishment he has received.
At the end of Mark 12, Jesus completes his public ministry with important teachings.

Today we hear about Jacob wrestling all night with a mysterious heavenly figure, and about Jacob's reunion with Esau.

Job says amazing things for his age: “I know that my Redeemer lives.”

In Mark 12, Jesus tells a pointed parable which doesn't help his popularity with the Jewish leaders, then publicly gives and embarrassing defeat to the Sadducee party.

Jacob escapes from his father-in-law Laban. After a tense encounter with Laban, Jacob and Laban make a covenant.

Bildad, read by my son-in-law, makes his second speech.
Jesus enters Jerusalem in triumph, cleanses the temple. This offends the chief priests (who were the business owners). Jesus confutes them when they ask him about his authority act.

DBRP_Jan17_2014 Gen30 Job17 Mrk10b

Today we hear of the rivalry between Rachel and Leah, and about more sons for Jacob. The son's names have meanings appropriate to what Rachel or Leah were feeling at the time.

Job again complains that he is surrounded by mockers, and despairingly again says “my hope will go down with me to the grave.”
Jesus prepares his disciples for his death, and teaches them about what it will be like to ‘lead’ in his kingdom.

Today we hear of Jacob being a trickster conniving with Rebecca to take the blessing of the firstborn.

In Job, Eliphaz gives his second speech and is just as critical of Job as he was before.
Jesus shows what kind of people will be the greatest in the Kingdom of God, talks about the seriousness of sin, and ends with some difficult figurative sayings (which I recommend for further study).

Today we hear the history of Isaac and Rebecca's family before the narrative focuses on their dissimilar twin sons, and especially Jacob.

Job asks, “Can the dead live again?”

In Mark Jesus is transformed when talking with Moses and Elijah and a father's faith is increased and a demon possessed son is liberated from a demon.

In Genesis 22, Abraham answers Isaac, “God will provide a sheep for the burnt offering, my son.” It is amazing to me that Moses adds the words, “To this day, people still use that name as a proverb: ‘On the mountain of the LORD it will be provided.’” This turns out to be a prophecy about Christ!

In Mark, Jesus feeds the 4,000, and gives a teaching the disciples didn't understand: Beware of the yeast of the Pharisees and of Herod.”

In today's reading in Genesis we hear words that surprisingly come back in the New Testament: “Get rid of that slave woman and her son. He is not going to share the inheritance with my son, Isaac.”

And Jesus directly calls the Jewish religious leaders ‘Hypocrites’, and says “You skillfully sidestep God’s law in order to hold on to your own tradition.”

My favorite quote from today's readings is this one where Job wishes that there could be a mediator between God and mankind:

33 If only there were a mediator between us,

someone who could bring us together.

34 The mediator could make God stop beating me,

and I would no longer live in terror of his

punishment.

In today's readings God establishes a covenant with Abram and gives important prophecies. Then Ishmael is born and Sarai mistreats Hagar.

In Job, Bildad gives his first response to Job, maintaining that God is just and that Job and his children must be sinners, since they gave been so clearly punished.

In Mark 5, Jesus heals in response to a woman's believing in Him, and Jesus encourages Jairus to keep on believing in Him.
