2015DBRP_203 Jer3-4 Ps139 John18b

Yesterday we read Jeremiah 2:13, some of the most frequently quoted words of Jeremiah:

13“For my people have done two evil things:

They have abandoned me—

the fountain of living water.

And they have dug for themselves cracked cisterns

that can hold no water at all!

Translation note for chapter 4:

2Then when you swear by my name, saying,

‘As surely as the LORD lives,’

you could do so

with truth, justice, and righteousness.

Then you would be a blessing to the nations of the world,

and all people would come and praise [Me//my name].”

Our God is a God who searches. This psalm has been a great comfort to many.

Jesus is walking inexorably to the cross. To me it is interesting that in Jesus’ short time with the governor of the land, Jesus brings the focus to the concept of ‘truth’.

Translation notes:

22Then one of the Temple guards standing nearby slapped Jesus across the face. [He snapped,]“Is that the way to answer the high priest?” [/he demanded.]

24Then (retired high priest) Annas bound Jesus and sent him to Caiaphas, the (current) high priest.

28Jesus’ trial before Caiaphas ended in the early hours of the morning. Then he was taken to the headquarters of the Roman governor.f His accusers didn’t go inside because it would defile them, and [they would not be able//they wouldn’t be allowed to] celebrate the Passover.

30[The Jewish leaders replied,] “We wouldn’t have handed him over to you if he weren’t a criminal!” [/they retorted].

35[Pilato snapped back,] “Am I a Jew?” [/Pilate retorted.] “Your own people and their leading priests brought you to me for trial. Why? What have you done?”
